About us
Nahara Upshatei is a leading company in the field of drainage and hydrology design.
Specializing in applied hydrology – runoff management, design of hydraulic structures, advanced 2D hydraulic models for floods, dam break and risk assessment modeling and designing drainage infrastructure.
Our plans stand for the highest standards while at the same time address the design constraints aware of the local population and the environment (ISO 9001 certified).
The name Nahara Upshatei is originated from the well-known Aramaic phrase “Nahara nahara upshatei” (Chulin 18).
Translation of this phrase is: each river has its own flood-plain.
The phrase meaning is: as there are no two similar rivers and each river has its own route, each community has its own habits. Those habits should all be accepted.
Our attitude
The key for river restoration and modification for flood protection is to contemplate the river and its flood-plain as one all unit. Flood maps, depth maps and velocity distribution maps are useful tool to assess the river territory characteristics.
The river is dynamic and accommodate millions of interactions or processes such as flow and flow resistance, vegetation and erosion, sediment transport and deposition processes. Designing, we must be aware, and let the river direct us. conservation of the river and its flood-plain territory and designing the human activities wisely so it won't be damaged by occasionally flooded river is most important.
Upshatei is verbally related to simple or plain ("pashut" in Hebrew).
We believe that the simple solution is the most reliable one and it started usually with creative thinking.
At the flood plains themselves, it is usually impossible to lower the water surface using magical solutions. We use the wonder wand at the bottlenecks and at the upper and lower boundary conditions of the flood-plain.

Nahara Upshatei’s team consist of talented and experienced engineers Leaded by engineer Rafi Halevi. Nahara Upshatei founded in 2005 and located in Yaad, Israel’s Galilee region.

During the design, we emphasize the learning of the environment. The design is strongly related to the field and our familiarity with it. The field is where the design principles are set and where the plan will be applied. The digital models and tools assist us in describing the field and flow conditions, and show us what is visible but not yet seen.
After learning the project and checking various options, we focus on principal decisions. Often, the all solution emerges from one basic decision that won’t be made without us.
